Rocky Cliff – Pt. 1

July 18th, 2010

Today I started working on an idea I had to filling in the empty space on the river side of the layout.  I thought I might be able to reuse my old Rubber Rocks I had from the old layout.

First I cut out a piece of foam board to fit the open space.

Since the original Rubber Rocks were shorter than what I needed, I had to cut ‘em up and rearrange them like a puzzle to fill in the space.

I glued the molds to the foam using Liquid Nails for foamboard, and then placed in on the layout for the initial “How does it look” test.

The next step will be to secure the piece to the backdrop permanently, fill in the gaps with Sculpt-a-Mold, and paint.

Those certainly do mak eit look more rugged . . . but I’m wondering if this isn’t a subtle attempt to have to avoid painting a backdrop . . . cool if it is, and way better then trying to create a forrest of puffballs.

Not entirely. I always planned on their being a cliff face in this spot on the layout like the original Salt Lake Route layout had in Model Railroader. I did consider simply painting some distant hills, but I opted to go with the cliff face to help hide the backdrop support near the bridge.

Right now also I’m playing with the idea of adding a waterfall to the cliff where it dips down as well. Instead of forcing the idea the river continues on behind the hill there, it’ll actually start right there where the waterfall is coming down. Got some water effects drying now.
